Translations can be paid by the number of characters, words, lines or pages of original text or of translated text (also known as source and target texts, respectively). I apply a rate per page, which is the most used in Italy, although other forms of prices quotes can be made if necessary. A page is defined as a block of text containing 1500 characters (or keystrokes), spaces included. This definition is not universally accepted — for example, some translators and agencies use 1375-character pages — so make sure you agree on what a page is when accepting a quotation.
To give you a quote I will need to know the number of characters in the document you want translated. If you are using Microsoft Word as a text editor, you can use Word's in-built function to provide the count. Here is how to do it:
1. Open the document in Word. Do not select anything, or select the portion of text that you want to translate.
2. In the Tools menu, click on Word Count. A box will appear showing the text statistics, including the number of characters (spaces included). Divide that number by 1500 and you'll have the number of pages.
If you're not sure about how to do this, send me the document and I will make the count for you. |
